Mathematics

At St Peter's, we believe that mathematics is an essential life skill that enables children to make sense of the world, think logically and solve problems with confidence. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, we develop pupils' fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills, ensuring they gain a deep and secure understanding of mathematical concepts rather than simply learning procedures.

Our mathematics curriculum is delivered through the White Rose Maths scheme for mixed-age classes, which is fully aligned with the National Curriculum and follows a mastery approach to teaching and learning.

Concepts are broken down into small, manageable steps, allowing pupils to develop a secure understanding before moving on to more complex learning. This approach ensures that children build strong foundations, make connections between mathematical ideas and develop confidence in applying their knowledge in a range of contexts.

A key feature of our curriculum is the development of mathematical fluency, enabling children to recall and apply key facts efficiently. Alongside this, pupils are encouraged to reason mathematically, explain their thinking, justify their answers and identify patterns and relationships. Regular opportunities for problem solving help children apply their learning to unfamiliar situations, developing resilience, independence and a positive attitude towards challenge.

Teachers use a range of representations, models and practical resources to support conceptual understanding and help pupils move fluently between concrete, pictorial and abstract forms of mathematics. Careful questioning and discussion enable children to articulate their thinking and deepen their understanding.

Through our mastery approach, we aim to develop confident, resilient and capable mathematicians who are well prepared for secondary school and equipped with the numerical understanding needed for everyday life. By fostering curiosity, perseverance and logical thinking, we help pupils recognise the importance of mathematics in the world around them and the opportunities it can unlock for their future.
